As whisky specialists, we at EW&W are thrilled to see some of the exceptional whiskies we supply being recognised at the IWSC Spirits awards 2023. The International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC) is one of the most prestigious awards in the spirits industry, recognising outstanding quality and excellence in the production of wine and spirits.

This year’s awards have seen some notable winners, including a few from whiskies that we supply. We’re especially proud to supply whisky casks from three distilleries that won awards this year – Deanston, Glen Moray, and Bunnahabhain. Let’s take a closer look at what makes these distilleries special and why they have received such prestigious recognition.

Deanston

Deanston is a Scottish distillery that was established in 1965. The distillery is located near the River Teith in the central Highlands of Scotland, in a former cotton mill. The mill was converted into a distillery in the 1960s by a group of local entrepreneurs who wanted to create a high-quality whisky that reflected the natural beauty and character of the Scottish Highlands.

One of the things that sets Deanston apart from other distilleries is its commitment to using only local ingredients and traditional production methods. The distillery uses water from the River Teith and locally grown barley to produce its whisky. It also uses traditional methods, such as open-topped wooden washbacks and direct-fired stills, to create a unique flavour profile that is full of character and depth.

This year, Deanston was awarded a Gold medal for its 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky. This particular whisky is matured in first-fill bourbon barrels and finished in Oloroso sherry casks, which give it a rich and complex flavour with notes of honey, caramel, and dark fruits.

Glen Moray

Glen Moray is another Scottish distillery that has been producing high-quality whisky for over a century. The distillery is located in Elgin, in the Speyside region of Scotland, which is known for producing some of the finest whiskies in the world.

One of the things that sets Glen Moray apart from other distilleries is its use of a wide range of casks for maturing its whisky. The distillery uses everything from ex-bourbon barrels to wine casks to create unique and interesting flavour profiles that appeal to a wide range of tastes.

This year, Glen Moray was awarded a Gold medal for its 25 Year Old Port Cask Finish Single Malt Scotch Whisky. This particular whisky is matured in American oak barrels before being finished in Port casks, which give it a sweet and fruity flavour with notes of raisins, figs, and dark chocolate.

Bunnahabhain

Bunnahabhain is a Scottish distillery that was founded in 1881 on the remote island of Islay. The distillery is known for producing a range of whiskies with a distinctive flavour profile that reflects the rugged and wild nature of the island.

One of the things that sets Bunnahabhain apart from other Islay distilleries is its use of unpeated barley. While many Islay whiskies are known for their smoky, peaty flavour, Bunnahabhain’s whiskies have a more subtle and delicate flavour that is influenced by the sea air and the local climate.

This year, Bunnahabhain was awarded a Gold medal for its 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky. This particular whisky is matured in ex-sherry casks and ex-bourbon barrels, which give it a rich and complex flavour with notes of dried fruits, chocolate, and a hint of smoke.
