A Whisky Innovation to Lower Greenhouse Gases

  • Chivas Brothers is testing a low-carbon fertiliser to reduce the environmental impact of whisky production.
  • This could cut emissions by 20% in barley and wheat cultivation.
  • At Elite Wine & Whisky we plant a tree for every cask sold.

Sustainability is becoming a major focus in the whisky world, and Chivas Brothers is leading the charge with an exciting new project aimed at reducing the environmental impact of whisky production. By testing a low-carbon fertiliser, they’re taking a big step towards making whisky greener.

Cutting Emissions by 20%

Chivas Brothers, in partnership with Simpsons Malt Limited and OCI Global, is trialling a new fertiliser called Nutramon Low Carbon. This fertiliser is made using certified biogas and could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20% in the cultivation of barley and wheat for whisky. This is a significant move, as a third of Chivas Brothers’ carbon footprint comes from growing these raw materials.

The project is still in the testing phase, with select farmers in the Chivas Brothers Wheat Growers Group using the fertiliser this season. If successful, this could pave the way for broader use of eco-friendly fertilisers in whisky production, significantly cutting down on the industry’s carbon emissions.

Our Commitment: Planting a Tree for Every Cask Sold

At Elite Wine & Whisky, we’re committed to supporting sustainability in the whisky industry. For every cask purchased through us, we plant a tree in partnership with Ecologi. This initiative helps to replenish the oak trees so essential to whisky production, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy fine spirits while also protecting our planet.

Forests play a crucial role in our ecosystem, from regulating carbon dioxide levels to preserving biodiversity. By planting a tree for every cask, we’re contributing to the global effort to combat climate change.
