Tamdhu Distillery

The Story

Situated on the banks of the River Spey near the village of Knockando, Tamdhu is a distillery with a brilliant history of revival. It was founded in 1897 by a consortium of blenders that included William Grant, who tasked the legendary architect Charles Doig with designing the most advanced distillery of its era. For well over a century, Tamdhu was a highly respected workhorse, quietly providing the structural backbone for world famous blends like The Famous Grouse and Cutty Sark. Despite its pedigree, the distillery was mothballed by the Edrington Group in 2010. However, this sparked one of the greatest modern comeback stories in Scotch whisky. In 2011, the independent family firm Ian Macleod Distillers rescued Tamdhu from the brink. Under their passionate stewardship, the distillery was entirely reborn as a premium single malt powerhouse with a strict, uncompromising dedication to 100 percent sherry cask maturation.

The Character & Production

The official Tamdhu house style is famously rich, fruity and deeply layered with sherry spice. To achieve this, the distillery operates a highly traditional setup. They utilise an 11.85 tonne stainless steel semi lauter mash tun and nine wooden washbacks crafted from Oregon pine. The wood encourages a specific microbial environment during the long 59 to 107 hour fermentation, creating a remarkably fruity and ester rich wash. This is then distilled through six beautifully shaped copper pot stills to produce a robust, weighty new make spirit. Because this core spirit is so full of character, it possesses the perfect weight to cope with aggressive maturation. Tamdhu is completely unique in its modern dedication to exclusively using Oloroso sherry casks from start to finish. This creates a deeply complex, dark and spiced dram that perfectly captures the old school magic of Speyside.
