Operating quietly at the foot of the Mannoch Hills in the heart of Speyside, The Glenrothes has a history as dramatic as the landscape surrounding it. Founded by James Stuart in 1878, the distillery remarkably saw its very first drops of pure spirit flow from the stills on December 28, 1879, the exact same day as the infamous and tragic Tay Bridge disaster.
For much of its life, Glenrothes served as a foundational pillar for world famous blending giants, most notably providing the sweet, fruity backbone for Cutty Sark. In 2010, the brand was purchased by prestigious London merchants Berry Bros. & Rudd, who championed its unique vintage releases. However, in 2017, the global luxury spirits group Edrington (who also own The Macallan and Highland Park) purchased the brand back. This marked the beginning of a massive premiumisation era, uniting the distillery and the brand under one incredibly powerful corporate roof to push Glenrothes into the highest echelons of the single malt luxury market.
