The story
⚜ Royal Warrant — King Charles III
Founded in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston on the rugged southern shores of Islay, Laphroaig is arguably the most famous and fiercely debated single malt in the world. Its most remarkable chapter belongs to Bessie Williamson, who in the 1950s became one of the very first women to own and manage a Scottish distillery, steering the brand to global prominence and pioneering the use of first-fill ex-bourbon barrels for maturation. Today, under Suntory Global Spirits, Laphroaig holds an incredibly prestigious Royal Warrant, originally granted in 1994 by King Charles III (then the Prince of Wales), who champions it as his absolute favourite single malt.
Character and Production
Laphroaig is one of the rare Scottish distilleries that still operates its own traditional floor maltings, providing around 20 percent of its total barley requirements. The barley is cold-smoked using incredibly tarry, coastal Islay peat at around 40 to 55ppm, producing a new-make famously bursting with aggressive iodine, seaweed, medicinal lozenges, and sweet vanilla. That underlying vanilla sweetness is Bessie Williamson’s lasting legacy, the result of her pioneering adoption of first-fill American oak ex-bourbon barrels for maturation.
