Rising from the rugged and untamed landscape of the Inner Hebrides, Jura is a distillery born out of pure community survival. Originally founded in 1810 by Archibald Campbell, the remote site eventually fell into ruin and was completely dismantled in 1901. For decades, the island suffered severe economic decline. In 1963 two local landowners, Robin Fletcher and Tony Riley Smith, took the monumental decision to rebuild the distillery from the ground up to bring jobs and life back to the island.
Today, under the ownership of Whyte and Mackay, it stands as the beating heart of a community of just over two hundred people. The distillery is intrinsically linked to the identity of the island, which is famously known as the place where author George Orwell wrote his masterpiece 1984. From a business perspective, it is an absolute powerhouse, consistently ranking as one of the best selling single malts in the entire United Kingdom.
