Longmorn

The Story

Regarded by industry insiders as the ultimate blender’s darling, Longmorn is a Speyside legend with a totally uncompromising reputation for quality. It was built in 1894 by the highly ambitious John Duff, who also founded the neighbouring Benriach distillery. While Benriach eventually closed for several decades, Longmorn never stopped producing, successfully weathering the Victorian whisky crashes to become an absolute powerhouse of the region. For over a century, the vast majority of its liquid was fiercely protected by blenders. It provides the rich, creamy heart for prestigious global brands like Chivas Regal and Royal Salute. However, the landscape for Longmorn changed dramatically very recently. Chivas Brothers completely repositioned the distillery into the ultra premium luxury tier, discontinuing its old core range to launch highly exclusive, annual batch releases like their new 18 Year Old and 22 Year Old expressions. This massive corporate push has finally placed Longmorn exactly where it belongs: right at the very top of the single malt luxury market.

The Character & Production

Longmorn is famously described by master blenders as a “top dress” malt. It produces an incredibly rich, complex and creamy spirit that is bursting with notes of ripe orchard fruits, sweet toffee and gentle baking spices. This luxurious texture is achieved through the specific shape of its copper pot stills. The distillery operates four wash stills and four spirit stills that are notably broad and onion shaped. This wide design allows for plenty of interaction between the spirit vapour and the purifying copper, while the relatively fast distillation captures a weighty, heavily textured liquid. Because the new make spirit is so robust and creamy, it possesses an extraordinary ability to age gracefully over many decades, soaking up the rich vanilla of American oak and the deep spices of European oak without ever losing its core distillery character.

Performance & Returns

For cask investors, Longmorn is the definition of a blue chip Speyside hold. Because it was historically graded as a “Top Class” malt by professional blenders, its underlying quality is entirely undisputed. Whisky connoisseurs and independent bottlers actively hunt for it, knowing that a well aged Longmorn can easily stand toe to toe with the most famous luxury brands in the world. The recent corporate decision to elevate Longmorn into an ultra premium, highly restricted single malt brand is the greatest news possible for independent cask owners. As the official bottles become increasingly expensive and scarce, the value of independently held casks surges in response. Securing a Longmorn cask today means acquiring a flawless, top tier spirit with phenomenal long term capital appreciation driven by immense corporate backing.
“The hidden jewel of Speyside steps into the luxury spotlight. With its exceptionally creamy spirit now repositioned as an ultra premium single malt by Chivas Brothers, Longmorn offers investors a flawless blue chip asset. A magnificent, high growth hold for any serious portfolio.”
