The story
Tamnavulin, translating from Scottish Gaelic as “the mill on the hill,” was purpose-built in 1966 during a massive global whisky boom, specifically designed to produce large quantities of high-quality spirit for the blending industry. For decades it operated quietly behind the scenes, even suffering a long period of closure in the late 1990s. After being acquired by United Spirits in 2007 and undergoing a massive refurbishment, the distillery was revived under Whyte and Mackay. In 2016, to celebrate its 50th anniversary, it was officially relaunched as a single malt brand and has since exploded in popularity, becoming one of the fastest growing single malts in the world thanks to its highly accessible price point and immense supermarket presence.
Character and Production
Tamnavulin produces a classic unpeated Speyside spirit that is exceptionally light, sweet, and packed with orchard fruit notes. Six lampglass-shaped copper pot stills and nine stainless steel washbacks feed a production process designed entirely around volume and versatility. Because the new-make is so breezy and ester-rich, it acts as the ultimate blank canvas for creative cask maturation.
