The story
Built in 1972 by blending giant Justerini and Brooks (now part of Diageo) in the rural Speyside hamlet of Mulben, Auchroisk was established following the serendipitous discovery of Dorie’s Well, a local spring producing exceptionally pure, soft water rising from granite bedrock and filtering through sandstone. Production began in 1974 with a singular mission: to provide high-quality malt for the globally dominant J&B Rare blend. Its Gaelic name translates as “shallow ford across the red stream.”
Character and Production
Despite its scale, Auchroisk does not compromise on quality. A relatively short fermentation of 46 to 53 hours combined with rapid distillation in eight tall copper pot stills, fitted with constrictions in the boil balls to encourage reflux, yields a lighter, cleaner spirit that is fresh, unpeated, and bursting with citrus and orchard fruits. The distillery uses a considered mix of American oak for vanilla and fresh sweetness alongside European oak for a signature nutty, spicy depth.
