The story
Built in 1894 by the highly ambitious John Duff, who also founded the neighbouring Benriach distillery, Longmorn never stopped producing through the Victorian whisky crashes that devastated much of the industry. For over a century, the vast majority of its liquid was fiercely protected by blenders, providing the rich, creamy heart for prestigious global brands including Chivas Regal and Royal Salute. The landscape changed dramatically when Chivas Brothers repositioned Longmorn into the ultra-premium luxury tier, discontinuing its old core range to launch highly exclusive annual batch releases — including a new 18 and 22 Year Old — placing it exactly where industry insiders have always believed it belongs.
Character and Production
Longmorn is famously described by master blenders as a “top dress” malt — one of the finest and most versatile components available. The distillery produces an incredibly rich, complex, and creamy spirit bursting with ripe orchard fruits, sweet toffee, and gentle baking spices, achieved through eight broad, onion-shaped copper pot stills. This wide design allows for maximum interaction between the spirit vapour and the purifying copper, while a relatively fast distillation captures a weighty, heavily textured liquid. Because the new-make spirit is so robust and creamy, it ages gracefully over many decades in both American and European oak.
