The story
Founded in 1839 by Alexander Matheson overlooking the dark waters of the Cromarty Firth, Dalmore passed to the Mackenzie family in 1867. This crucial connection gave the distillery its iconic emblem: the twelve-pointed Royal Stag, originally granted to Clan Mackenzie by King Alexander III in 1263. Today, under Whyte and Mackay, Dalmore is entering a monumental new era. A staggering £40 million expansion set to fully open in 2026 includes a brand new visitor centre and completely new still house, effectively doubling production capacity to meet surging global demand.
Character and Production
Dalmore produces a spectacularly rich, weighty, and fruity spirit that is world-renowned for its exceptional affinity with premium sherry wood. This heavy profile is achieved through one of the most unusual still rooms in all of Scotland: the wash stills feature completely flat tops instead of the typical swan necks, while the spirit stills are fitted with cold water jackets around their necks to increase reflux and produce a cleaner, heavier cut.
