The story

Philanthropy, fire and global reach

Founded by James Fleming in 1879, Aberlour was built beside St Drostan’s Well in the heart of Speyside. Fleming, whose family motto was “Let the Deed Show,” used the distillery’s early profits to build a town hall, cottage hospital, and the Penny Bridge for the local community. After a devastating fire in 1898, it was rebuilt by the renowned distillery architect Charles Doig. Today, owned by Chivas Brothers (Pernod Ricard), Aberlour is the number one best-selling single malt whisky in France and one of the most recognisable Speyside malts worldwide.

Character and Production

Slow distillation and the art of double-cask

Aberlour employs a deliberately slow distillation process with a 7.5-hour spirit run and a two-hour middle cut, among the slowest in Scotland. This produces a fruit-forward new make rich with blackcurrant, red berries, and citrus. The vast majority of output is matured separately in first-fill American oak and European Oloroso sherry butts, before being expertly married together.

A’bunadh — Aberlour’s cult-classic, batch-released, cask-strength expression is considered one of the definitive heavy-sherry whiskies on the modern market, highly sought-after by both collectors and investors.

Investment Outlook

Performance and returns

A blue-chip Speyside malt with an exceptionally loyal global following. Brand recognition across mainland Europe, where Aberlour dominates the single malt market, makes this a highly sought-after liquid for collectors and investors alike. Recent expansion makes older, pre-expansion casks increasingly rare, a compelling dynamic for existing cask holders. First-fill sherry butts carry the strongest compound return potential given global appetite for heavily sherried Speyside malts. Independent bottlings are highly prized, with older vintage expressions commanding significant premiums at auction.

Any Bottle retail figures mentioned on this page refer to independent bottlings, not cask valuations.

"A true Speyside heavyweight with a cult following. The global demand for heavily sherried whiskies shows no sign of slowing down, making Aberlour a remarkably resilient and lucrative cornerstone for any serious portfolio."
