The story
Founded by James Fleming in 1879, Aberlour was built beside St Drostan’s Well in the heart of Speyside. Fleming, whose family motto was “Let the Deed Show,” used the distillery’s early profits to build a town hall, cottage hospital, and the Penny Bridge for the local community. After a devastating fire in 1898, it was rebuilt by the renowned distillery architect Charles Doig. Today, owned by Chivas Brothers (Pernod Ricard), Aberlour is the number one best-selling single malt whisky in France and one of the most recognisable Speyside malts worldwide.
Character and Production
Aberlour employs a deliberately slow distillation process with a 7.5-hour spirit run and a two-hour middle cut, among the slowest in Scotland. This produces a fruit-forward new make rich with blackcurrant, red berries, and citrus. The vast majority of output is matured separately in first-fill American oak and European Oloroso sherry butts, before being expertly married together.
