The story

The first Royal Warrant in whisky history — a regal legacy reborn

Founded in 1812 by Captain William Fraser on the historic Cawdor Estate, Royal Brackla produced a spirit of such exceptional quality it caught the attention of the British monarchy. In 1833 King William IV granted Brackla the very first Royal Warrant ever bestowed upon a Scotch whisky, officially designating it “The King’s Own Whisky.” Queen Victoria later renewed this warrant in 1838. For much of the 20th century, Royal Brackla operated as a high-quality blending component before being acquired by John Dewar and Sons (Bacardi) in 1998, who have since driven a magnificent renaissance and successfully repositioned this historic Highland malt into the ultra-luxury single malt category it was always destined for.

Character and Production

Ascending lyne arms, 70-hour fermentation and a triple sherry finishing programme

Royal Brackla produces a remarkably elegant, fruity, and highly perfumed Highland spirit, meticulously crafted to maximise ester creation. A long fermentation of approximately 70 hours encourages a highly fruity wash, which is then distilled slowly through four exceptionally tall copper pot stills.

Ascending lyne arms — crucially, the lyne arms on Royal Brackla’s stills point sharply upwards. This creates a massive amount of reflux, forcing heavier vapours to fall back into the pot while only the lightest, most fragrant, and purest alcohol makes it through to the condensers. Because the resulting new-make is so clean and vibrantly fruity, it possesses an incredible acidity that allows it to cut through heavy oak — making it the perfect canvas for the distillery’s ambitious triple sherry finishing programme.
