Tamnavulin

The Story

Located deep in the Speyside region on the banks of the River Livet, Tamnavulin – which translates from Scottish Gaelic as “the mill on the hill” – is one of the younger distilleries in Scotland. It was purpose built in 1966 during a massive global whisky boom, specifically designed to churn out huge quantities of high quality spirit for the blending industry. For decades, it operated quietly behind the scenes and even suffered a long period of closure in the late 1990s. However, the distillery experienced a monumental revival after being acquired by United Spirits in 2007, which initiated a massive refurbishment. Today, under the ownership of Whyte and Mackay (backed by Emperador Inc.), Tamnavulin has stepped entirely out of the blending shadows. In 2016, to celebrate its 50th anniversary, it was officially relaunched as a single malt brand. Since then, it has exploded in popularity, becoming one of the fastest growing single malts in the world thanks to its highly accessible price point and immense supermarket presence.

The Character & Production

Tamnavulin produces a classic, unpeated Speyside spirit that is exceptionally light, sweet and packed with orchard fruit notes. The distillery operates on a truly massive scale, utilising a large lauter mash tun and nine stainless steel washbacks to feed six lampglass shaped copper pot stills. Because the resulting new make spirit is so breezy and ester rich, it serves as the ultimate blank canvas for creative cask maturation. While the brand initially launched with its signature Double Cask expression, it has recently become globally famous for its highly innovative wine cask finishes. The distillery has released a wildly successful series of single malts finished in French Cabernet Sauvignon, Spanish Grenache, German Pinot Noir and even Sauvignon Blanc casks. This makes Tamnavulin an incredibly versatile spirit that adapts beautifully to almost any wood type.

Performance & Returns

The investment thesis for Tamnavulin is incredibly straightforward and highly compelling: it is the ultimate volume play. Because it is positioned as an affordable, entry level malt with worldwide distribution, it enjoys immense brand visibility. You will find it in almost every major supermarket, which drives massive, consistent global brand growth year on year. For cask investors, this accessibility is a huge advantage. Young casks of Tamnavulin can be acquired at a fantastic entry price compared to older, legacy Speyside brands. Because the distillery produces a sweet spirit that ages beautifully, holding a cask for 15 to 20 years offers phenomenal upside. As the official brand continues to grow its global footprint, older independent bottlings become highly sought after at auction. A well aged Tamnavulin, particularly one resting in a unique wine or sherry cask, provides investors with a brilliant, high growth asset with virtually unlimited potential.

By combining a light, highly versatile spirit with an incredibly successful retail presence, Tamnavulin offers investors a fantastic, cost effective entry point into the whisky market. With its worldwide distribution driving massive brand awareness, a long term hold presents brilliant capital appreciation.”
