Tormore

The Story

A Speyside architectural marvel, Tormore was the very first new distillery built in Scotland during the post Second World War whisky boom. Constructed between 1958 and 1960, it was designed by the highly regarded Sir Albert Richardson, a former president of the Royal Academy who was awarded the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture. The design is so strikingly beautiful, featuring a granite facade, copper rotors and a musical clock that plays four different Scottish songs, that it was granted listed building status in 1986 despite being less than thirty years old! Originally built to supply malt for the Long John blend, Tormore eventually passed into the massive Pernod Ricard portfolio. However, a monumental shift occurred in 2022 when Pernod Ricard sold the distillery to Elixir Distillers. This acquisition marked the beginning of an incredibly exciting new chapter, as the new owners are entirely dedicated to elevating Tormore into a globally recognised, premium single malt brand.

The Character & Production

For decades, Tormore was the hidden gem of the blending world. The distillery produces a beautifully smooth, nutty spirit that is famous for its vibrant notes of pear, melon and sweet orchard fruits. This distinct flavour profile is achieved through an impressive setup. The stillhouse features four wash stills and four spirit stills designed with traditional pot shapes leading into unique Ogee and flanged heads fitted with purifiers. This setup encourages a clean, fruity new make spirit that performs exceptionally well during maturation. Historically, official single malt bottlings were incredibly rare, with the vast majority of the five million litres produced annually vanishing into blends like Chivas Regal and Ballantine’s. Now, under Elixir Distillers, the focus has entirely shifted to nurturing this fruity spirit in premium casks to showcase its true single malt potential.
