The Story

Bringing single malt production back to the city for the first time in over a century, The Glasgow Distillery Company is a pioneering force in the modern Lowland revival. Founded in 2012 by Liam Hughes, Mike Hayward and Ian MacDougall, the distillery takes its name from the original Glasgow Distillery which was founded in 1770 and tragically closed its doors in 1902. Operating out of a repurposed industrial site in Hillington, the team laid down their first casks in 2015. Since launching their flagship “Glasgow 1770” single malt brand, they have completely disrupted the market, winning sweeping international awards and proving that the vibrant, gritty spirit of Glasgow can produce absolute world class whisky.

The Character & Production

The distillery is incredibly ambitious and is famous for producing three entirely distinct styles of Lowland single malt under the same roof: a classic Unpeated double distilled spirit, a rich and heavily Peated spirit, and an exceptionally smooth Triple Distilled spirit. To achieve this, they operate four compact copper pot stills affectionately named Tara, Mhairi, Frances and Margaret. Because the stills are relatively small, the spirit has maximum contact with the copper, resulting in a bright, fruity and wonderfully pure new make. The distillery is also intensely experimental with its wood policy, frequently maturing or finishing their versatile spirit in virgin oak, Pedro Ximénez sherry, Madeira, Ruby Port and even Tequila casks for their highly acclaimed Small Batch series.

Performance & Returns

For cask investors, there is a crucial piece of history that makes Glasgow Distillery incredibly attractive. In late 2020, the distillery permanently closed its private “Cask Club” and released its final allocation of casks to the public. This means it is now impossible to buy a cask directly from the distillery, artificially capping the supply and making independent Glasgow 1770 casks exceptionally rare on the secondary market. The brand’s prestige is currently skyrocketing. They recently launched their first ever 10 Year Old single malt, which completely sold out in under 20 minutes. Securing an independently held cask of Glasgow 1770 today allows investors to tap into a rapidly premiumising, cult favourite urban brand where demand is massively outstripping the available private supply.
